My work is nostalgic, fun, but never twee. I love sketching on location, visiting galleries and museums and rummaging around charity shops for inspirational finds such as vintage children’s books or house shaped teapots.
I graduated from Maidstone College of Art in 1996 with a BA in illustration. Since then I’ve worked on and off as an illustrator alongside working in galleries, museums, shops and schools. I illustrated for magazines such as Home Flair and Bliss. Illustrated a poetry book for Tower Hamlets Council and designed for Hallmark Cards.
In 2016 after returning to my museum job after maternity leave I decided to take the big leap into full time illustration. I created a range of Christmas cards featuring dogs and cats in Christmas jumpers, set up an Etsy shop and started selling at fairs. This led to me being asked to create pet portraits, which in turn led to family portraits and house portraits. I became a Notonthehighstreet partner and for the next few years I created literally hundreds of hand-painted personalised portraits. In 2019 I was a finalist for the Notonthehighstreet Make Awards.
However over time I became tired of creating portraits. I’d lost the love for the them and I missed the spontaneity of creating new art. The portraits had become a little too ‘paint by numbers’ for me so it was time to knock this gift horse in the mouth and move on to pastures new.
I started drawing on location again. I joined in with drawing challenges on instagram like #3materialsdrawingchallenge and kept a sketchbook with me at all times. It felt like going back to art college again and I absolutely loved it.
I began to work digitally alongside my hand-painted illustrations. One of my first digital commissions was to create illustrations for Settle housing, which featured recognisable Hertfordshire housing estates and their communities. This was a big project for their brand identity, website and annual report. I was thrilled to get the commission, because along with it being a subject close to my heart, it was also a great first digital project to get my teeth into.
I’m currently focusing on building my illustration portfolio to cover a wider range of subjects. I’m interested in working on greeting cards, editorial illustrations, children’s books, jigsaws, and packaging. I'm welcoming new clients, so if you like my work, or want to discuss opportunities, please do get in touch!
